My response to the fools
I was watching a great video of a machine gun shoot here http://www.bestofgooglevideo.com/video.php?video=376 and noticed the rating votes leaned heavy towards the unfavorable.  I then began to read the blog replies and found that there were a bunch of non-US citizens who loathe the fact that we have gun rights, and excercise defense.  They further commence to bash our actions in Iraq, our foreign policy, and directly blamed us for the existence of terrorism stating that we provoke it.  Well, I just couldn't keep quiet about that, so I weighed in.  Read full article to enjoy the zing.

OK, ugly American weighing in here.

Except for tyranny, slavery, genocide, Nazism, Fascism, and Communism, war has never resolved anything.

What is the object element for? And what's it got to do with accessibility?
Currently we add images to our pages using the img element, we tend to add fancy bits of video or wizzy and exciting flash using the applet element. So why do we need the object element? The object element introduced as part of HTML 4, and is designed to be used for all instances when we want to embed a generic object - such as a flash movie, or a video or an image - into a web page. That's all very well but what's it got to do with accessibility? Well the fantastic thing about the Object elements is that you can use it to provide lots of alternative presentations of your content - you are not confined to providing a simple text equivalent - as you are for when using the img tag.For example, you want to provide a Quicktime video on a web page - but it turns out that some browsers don't have the support for Quicktime - so you can specify that a mpeg movie be played instead, or some other alternative format. If the mpeg movie isn't supported you can specify that a text transcription should be used - and so on.To add the fun - for browsers that don't support the object element you can provide the embed element within the object element as yet another alternative method of delivering your multi-media.So there you go; the object element is a kind of Swiss army knife (so to speak) you can add to your web accessibility tool box.LinksW3 Schools Juicy Studio

Working, speaking, and generally busy
I haven't blogged for awhile (missed a month! -- wow, where does the time go?). I have been working various short-term gigs for several months now, typically flying onsite to a few locations, as well as one-three week assignments. I also spent a couple of days teaching a VB 2005 class at a company. Those are great opportunities, but sometimes you need to settle down a little in order to get some steady income again. I started a full-time contract in Boston this past week plus I am working a few other small projects.

I will be spending a little more time on the road over the next two weeks speaking at conferences. Here is my schedule:
  • May 6-7 - Code Camp 5, Waltham, Massachusetts - I have four talks I am doing: 'Threat Modeling for Web Applications', 'Reliable Applications with System.Transactions', 'Build Queuing Database Applications with Service Broker', 'Secure Data Applications' (This last one is new talk for me with a code-intensive demonstration of secure techniques to secure most kinds of data applications)
  • May 9-11 - DevTeach, Montreal - 'Reliable Applications with System.Transactions', 'Build Queuing Database Applications with Service Broker', Part of the 'SQL Server Round Table'
  • May 17 - VSLive!, Orlando - 'Leveraging .NET 2.0 Security Features' (Black-Belt session)
Regarding the upcoming TechEd 2006 in Boston, I found out yesterday the BoF I submitted was not picked (thanks to all who voted, though). I have been seeing quite a bit of discussion about issues with developing as non-admin on Vista, so this would have been a very interesting discussion, but it may be too early for this. I also found recently I was picked to be an expert again in the Connected Systems group at TechEd. That should be fun.

Video game concerts draw packed crowds
was a scene many orchestras would envy at a time when classical groups continue to struggle financially, and when some are branching out to try new formats as a means for survival.Liam Conlon doesn't fit the profile of your typical classical concertgoer. But when the high school freshman recently discovered that a show featuring music from the computer game "Final Fantasy" would be playing near his suburban Chicago home, he could hardly believe it.He and a friend snapped up a pair of fifth-row tickets to the Rosemont Theatre concert and joined the cheering, sellout crowd of nearly 4,500 that turned out to see the Chicagoland Pops Orchestra play. Above the stage, images from the game — a theatrical and multi-chaptered quest to save the world — played on giant video screens. The response — including several standing ovations — was much the same last year when the Los Angeles Philharmonic played the music at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Buy kids video games for their minds and bodies
This Christmas my nephews are getting Dance Dance Revolution (PS2) (or Xbox), the popular arcade dance game that's been repurposed on the PS2 and xBox. I first encountered DDR at the Sony Metronome in San Francisco around '99 or so; a local news station was doing a piece on a kid in his early 20s who had danced away 60lbs. So, why buy a typicaly video game that makes them even more sedentary? DDR gets them moving. That's not to say DDR is just for kids, there are lots of ADULTS purchasing DDR setups for exercise, in fact, I even know a couple that has two pads they use to complete with each other. You can get way serious about all this and order arcade quality dance pads. I wanted to find an old copy of the Disney DDR cartridge for my nephews, however prices are currently around $150.
